Blending Styles vs. Matching Sets

February 21, 2013 § Leave a comment

Furniture sets are perfect if you want to furnish an entire room with one purchase. Sets will always match in terms of color and style. However, the large initial cost can be out of reach for some and not everyone likes the matching look of sets. If you have decided that a furniture set is not for you, here are some tips to building the look of a room from separate pieces.

Generally, furniture will vary in terms of its coloring and its style. Furniture stores in MA and RI usually stock a wide selection of furniture, so take some time to find out which looks appeal to you. The easiest way to build your own set of furniture is to choose pieces that have the same color or finish, as well as the same general style. It is easy to match oak pieces together, for example, and many variations on a traditional style will look good without having to match exactly.

If you want to create your own mixed style, then consider which wood colors are complementary. When choosing wood finishes, try to keep the colors within a few shades of each other. Mixing extremes, like birch and mahogany, can look harsh. Medium-toned woods can blend together and add depth and richness to a room. If you are planning on a painted finish, stick to similar colors. Many pieces are available in black and white finishes, so choose one or the other for a more cohesive look.

It’s also important to choose the furniture style carefully. Traditional furniture tends to be more ornate and decorated. It has carved or painted details and it is also often heavier and bulkier than modern furniture. Modern furniture is usually made up of clean lines and has little ornamentation. There are many variations within these two basic styles, so it is easy to mix different levels of traditional and modern together.

It’s not always easy to tell if separate pieces will work well together. RI and MA furniture is available in many styles, so browse your options. Take pictures or save the online pictures of pieces you like and create an inspiration board for the room. Simply place all the pictures together and you’ll have a pretty good idea of how the pieces will work. This is a great idea if you already have one or two pieces and you need to see how new pieces will work with them.

Shopping for new furniture is an exciting process and blending different styles of furniture together can create a room that is uniquely you. Remember, when it comes to creating your personal style, there are no wrong choices.
